Consecrated Life: The Vows - Poverty

Thursday, March 19, 2015

If you want to be rich, you must be poor. Then you will be rich in everything, if you are poor in spirit.  It isn’t property that makes you rich, but the spirit. (St. Ambrose, letter 63.) Read more

Fourth Wednesday of Lent: What if it's true?

Wednesday, March 18, 2015

Wasn't Jesus just a good human person? Charismatic, prophetic, a bit too idealistic maybe, and politically a bit too crass? Upsetting a lot of people, but basically a good guy in the wrong place? A man uniquely touched by God, but still just a man like us? Read more

Fourth Sunday of Lent: Looking Up

Sunday, March 15, 2015

The other day, I attended a little concert of Oxford's most likeable wind quintet OULikeIt!. It was a wonderful occasion in the little chapel of Lincoln College, Oxford. The music was great and helped me to relax after a hectic final week of term. When I left the chapel, I felt re-energised, joyful. Read more

Third Tuesday of Lent: Boundless mercy

Tuesday, March 10, 2015

Today’s Gospel is not just about forgiveness but also concerns patience. Most of us have the capacity to show mercy on occasion. And yet we tire of being merciful quite quickly, and besides - one wouldn’t wish to be regarded as ‘soft’, to employ an adjective used in the North of England.  Read more

Consecrated Life: The Rich Young Man - Counsels and Commandments

Monday, March 09, 2015

In the Gospel according to Matthew, we have the encounter between the Rich Young Man and Our Lord. He was a man who was consciously aware of his need for God in his life. He recognised that man has the potential for eternal life. From this recognition he asks Our Lord what he must do to attain it. The young man is told to keep the Commandments. After informing Our Lord that he already keeps these, Jesus says that in order to be perfect he must give up all he possess, give to the poor, and follow Him.  Read more

Third Sunday of Lent: Do not be afraid

Sunday, March 08, 2015

“The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father's house a marketplace!’” (John 2:13-16) Read more
