Great Dominicans: St Agnes of Montepulciano

Wednesday, January 06, 2016

If you like Dominicans and good red wines then there are two very good reasons to visit Montepulciano. Situated on a hilltop in the Italian province of Siena, in southern Tuscany, Montepulciano is famous throughout Italy and beyond for its superb red wine, not to be confused with the inferior wine, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, which is produced from the Montepulciano grape, but which grape, confusingly, has no links with the town other than a shared name. Read more

Joseph the Just Man

Friday, December 18, 2015

Third Thursday of Advent - Living in the Past?

Thursday, December 17, 2015
If you were to draw up two columns and in the first write down your major priorities in life and in the second what you expend most of your time, money and energies upon, do you think there would be a certain incongruence? In searching for God as He is, I’ve had to shed a lot of ideas about God as I wanted Him to be. I doubt I’m the first friar this has happened to, and in any event, nobody should want to take comfort in false notions, particularly not if you’re seeking to join an Order with the motto ‘Veritas’. Read more

First Monday of Advent - Getting our house in order

Monday, November 30, 2015

One of the gifts of the 2010 Revised Translation of the Missal was that it made many of the scriptural references and quotations in the Mass much clearer. In the Gospel for the First Monday of Advent, we have one of the best examples of this: we cannot now fail to see the parallel between the centurion’s words to Jesus and those we say after the priest invites us to Communion: ‘Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof . . . just give the word and my servant will cured / but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.’ Read more
