Many vocations - but not enough funds to train them!

Friars currently training for the priesthood in Oxford

The Dominican Friars in Britain have seen a surge of vocations in recent years. Now we urgently need to raise £1 million to cover the costs of training these men for the priesthood.

The cost of training a man for the mission

By our estimate, the seven years of training before priestly ordination costs about £115,000 for one friar (around £16,500 each year). That's including board and lodging, tuition fees and formation expenses.

Currently, 12 men are in training for the English Province, and new vocations are coming all the time. This is good news, but it means considerable costs for us!

Investment income only covers part of our projected costs. We want to avoid having to divert money away from our other areas of activity - our mission in parishes, universities and schools.

Our urgent funding needs

To ensure we can cover the Friars’ training needs, we need to meet or exceed a fundraising target of £1 million by the end of 2017. If we can meet this target, it will mean that we won’t have to divert money away from our mission-related activities to pay the costs of training new friars. And if our fundraising exceeds our target, this is even better news, as we can reduce the financial pressures on the novice house in Cambridge and the Blackfriars, Oxford, where the friars study for six years.

We are getting there!

The good news is that we are closing in on our target!

  • We have received several generous personal gifts, grants from trusts, and several legacies.
  • We were overwhelmed by the positive response when we asked for sponsors for this 190-mile walk by four of our friars, and for Fr Bruno's gruelling ultra-marathons!
  • Many people have set up standing orders.
